The tunoof "Annie Laurie" is hy Lady John Scott. The song isra startling instance of how a Love-song may accidentally become National music. During the Crimean war "Annie Laurio" became the favorite song of the entire British army in Russia. It resounded at every campfire as Bayard Taylor puts it:
"Though each recalled a different name, They all snng Annie Laurie." Annie Laurie (circa 1600) was the eldest of the threo daughters of Sir'Robert Laurie of Maxwellton. The verses in her honor were written by William Douglas,of Kirkcudbright. |
